The land, the planes and the slopes, even the steep ones, once were cultivated intensively producing both the necessary for each family as well as a surplus used for exchanges. To support this, extensive, well structured and maintained routes were crossing Karystia all around Mt Oche.
Some of these trails have survived the modern activities, the paved roads, the industrial installment of aeolic energy turbines and the stone quarries, reminding us of the intensive human activities in the landscapes we now see abandoned.
Olive trees, grape yards, cereals, domestic animals in thousands, and a way of life we can hardly comprehend. Technologies, know-how, artworks, lots of music and dancing were the core of this culture.
The trails, the architectural uniqueness of the domestic ruins, the threshing fields, and the stone walls, is the proof we have of this shortly gone way of life. Our cooperative supports the idea of promoting these as a heritage of Karystia and important assets for its sustainable development.
We chose as a starting point the search and revival of these ancient routes since we consider this will also promote the interest of the residents and visitors to experience Karystia, its nature and culture.
We have been active in searching the aspects of this effort, establishing the necessary collaborations, working on the field, and considering possible funding. Our cooperative is open to collaborations on this topic.
